MISSION STATEMENT

PADRES Contra El Cáncer is an organization committed to improving the quality of life for children with cancer and their families.

HISTORY

PADRES was organized after two research studies funded by the American Cancer Society indicated that culturally-relevant educational and emotional support services for the Latino patient were lacking in the medical setting. The outcome of the studies influenced the medical community to recognize culturally-relevant education and emotional support as vital health-related resources in ensuring success of the recommended treatment plan and, ultimately, survival of the child.

PADRES has assisted more than 8,300 childhood cancer patients and 41,500 immediate family members through partnerships with hospitals in California, Florida, New York and Nevada.

PROGRAM

PADRES families receive free services in three critical areas: Health & Educational Programs and Activities, Family Services and Emotional Support.

The expert case management care provided to PADRES families is critical, and includes the creation of a personal family plan that caters to the family’s educational, emotional and economic needs. Membership is free and limited to any child between 0-21 years of age who has been diagnosed with cancer or a blood disease.

PADRES focuses on six core strategies in order to fulfill its mission:
 Family Education
 Family / Caregiver Support Services
 Support Services for Children and Youth
 Information and Referrals for Families and Providers
 Community Education and Outreach
 Research Collaboration

VOLUNTEERING

In 2013, PADRES volunteers accumulated more than 4,700 hours of community service for the benefit of PADRES’ children and families, equating to a projected fair market value of $115,000 in pro-bono, donated labor. Volunteers generously give their time and energy to fulfill PADRES’ mission by providing support in Patient & Family Programs, Marketing & Communications, Fund Development and Event Volunteer work.
