Increase in School Lunch Prices
For the 17-18 school year, it will be necessary to increase our lunch prices. This increase is in response to a January 2017 California Food Services State Audit, where at that time, SJCA was informed they must charge no less than the minimum federal rate requirement.
The new rates are as follows:
Paid Breakfast Lunch JA and Elementary: $2.25; Reduced Lunch Price: .25 cents
Paid Lunch JA and Elementary: $3.00; Reduced Lunch Price: .25 cents
For your convenience, an application for the National Lunch Program has been included in our Back-to-School mailer. We highly recommend you complete this form and return to the office as soon as possible. Although your student may not always choose to buy lunch, this form also allows additional LCFF Supplemental Program Funding for our school.
● Pizza lunches will be discontinued
● Parents have the option of bringing in goodie bags and a celebration snack to be distributed in the last 15 minutes of the school day
● Other options to celebrate may include:
Birthday book donation to the class library
Playground balls and equipment
Classroom board games
Dear SJCA Families,
I hope you are all enjoying the summer break. There have been a number of exciting things taking place while you’ve been away!
SJCA has a new Board of Directors member - Ms. Lisa Avakian. With the resignation of Mr. Brad Manning, a founding Board member, Ms. Avakian was selected by the Board to continue the impactful work of Mr. Manning. Ms. Avakian comes to this position with a multitude of experience in marketing and community relations. She is currently the Marketing Director for the Starwood Retail Partners - Plaza West Covina. The SJCA Board and Administration feel very strongly that Ms. Avakian will be a tremendous asset to our school community.
The SJCA Board of Directors and Administration are very excited about the renovations taking place for the elementary and junior academy basketball courts. When students return, they will be greeted by brightly colored courts covered with Powergame Sports tiles. Each whole court will also have new adjustable poles and custom backboards installed. Great times on the basketball courts for our students!
SJCA has entered in to a partnership with the West Covina Unified School District to have solar installed on our school campus. While this will provide a savings to the school, we are also hoping that the location of the solar panels will serve as shade structures for our students on the junior academy side. Installation of the solar panels is scheduled for December or January. We will keep you posted!
Plans are underway to completely replace the current junior academy field with a new field that will include a new irrigation system, sod covering, soccer goals, and softball backstop. This project is in the planning stages, and work should begin in November.
As all of our 4th & 5th grade students know, the Shark playground equipment is off limits. We are happy to announce that a new 4th/5th playground will be installed this fall using the WCUSD Bond funds that were approved last November.
With the installation of the new playground equipment, the JA fitness area needs to be relocated. A location is currently being selected, and all new equipment is being ordered. The WCUSD Bond is also funding this project.
